Wooden High Chairs
Many parents prefer the classic look of wooden high chairs. They may remind
them of their own childhood and bring back fond memories of their early
family life. No matter what the reason, wooden chairs can be a practical
alternative to the plastic furniture we often use for small children.
No matter what type of highchair you buy, your baby's safety is the primary
consideration. Look for a highchair which has a wide base for the greatest
stability. Many babies try to reach out of their chair and if the base is
too narrow, they could tip the chair over.
A highchair should also have a harness system to keep your baby in place
during mealtime. If she can climb out of her chair by herself, she could be
in for a nasty fall.
An easy way to verify the safety of any highchair no matter wooden or
plastic is to look for the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA)
seal. This is an independent organization that has established safety
guidelines for many baby products. The JPMA seal means that the product has
met their standards.
When shopping for a wooden high chair, consider that light colored woods
will show stains more than dark colored woods. If your baby is a messy
eater, you might be better off with a chair that is a dark color.
To make life easier for Mom or Dad, try to find a wooden chair that has a
one hand tray release mechanism. Many babies are eager to get out of their
chair after mealtime so you might find yourself struggling with the tray and
baby at the same time.
If the highchair comes with a seat pad, make sure it has a removable cover
that can be machine washed. Mealtime can be messy so you can be sure to
expect lots of stains everywhere!
